Early Predictions for the Buffalo Bills' 2015 Season

This is going to be the Buffalo Bills’ year. The Bills haven’t been to the playoffs since 1999, but this is probably the most talented roster that the Bills have had in the past 15 years. They have a talented running game, a solid defense and a great new head coach. The outlook for the season looks great for the Bills, and here are five early predictions for the team’s 2015 season.

5. The Bills Will Have a Top 5 Defense

This prediction isn’t that big of a surprise. The Bills already had a terrific defense before they added Rex Ryan to the fold. Ryan is an excellent defensive coach, and the unit should only improve under his tutelage. Given that the team has elite players like Mario Williams, Marcell Dareus, Stephon Gilmore and Jerry Hughes, it would be more surprising if the Bills weren't one of the top defensive units in the league.

The Bills didn’t trade for Matt Cassel for him to be a backup. I think that Cassel will start the season as the starter, and if he does well, he will hold onto the position. I don’t think Tyrod Taylor will challenge him for snaps, but if Cassel struggles, EJ Manuel may replace him. Still, I think Cassel will start more games than any other quarterback, and I expect him to last for most, if not all, of the season.

3. LeSean McCoy Will Lead the NFL in Rushing

LeSean McCoy has a chance to carry the ball 20-30 times a game in Rex Ryan’s offensive scheme. Ryan has always run a “ground and pound” offense and that will not change in Buffalo. McCoy should be able to succeed behind the Bills’ revamped offensive line, and I have a feeling that if he gets 300+ carries like he has the last two seasons, he will be able to lead the league in rushing.

Last season, the Bills were able to go 9-7 with Kyle Orton, CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson carrying the offense. Now, they have Matt Cassel and LeSean McCoy poised to do the same, along with second-year receiver Sammy Watkins, and Percy Harvin. Those are upgrades. And the team also had a coaching upgrade, so Rex Ryan should lead the Bills to 10 or 11 wins and that should be good enough for a wild-card spot.

I mean, if the Buffalo Bills can notch double-digit wins with Matt Cassel at quarterback, then Rex Ryan should win coach of the year. I really do expect that to happen. I think Ryan’s game plan will fit in very nicely with this team and he probably will be the leading candidate for coach of the year along with Mike Zimmer of the Minnesota Vikings. Ryan will edge him out because of the Bills’ quarterback issues.
