Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp Battles to Watch in 2015

The Pittsburgh Steelers have talent on both sides of the ball heading into the upcoming season. The question: Who are the most talented players who will get the opportunity to make a difference come game time? Many of those questions will be answered in training camp.

This is less of a question of who will start. Instead, how much playing time will they get? Williams was signed in the offseason as a free agent from Carolina and proves to be the main back during Le'Veon Bell's three-game suspension. Archer struggled to carve out a niche in the Steelers' offense in his rookie year. Training camp will show if Archer can use his speed to give the offense more versatility, or if Williams will carry the load.

Markus Wheaton failed to lock down the slot wide receiver position, opening the door for third-round pick Sammie Coates. This will largely be dependent upon Coates' ability to learn the playbook and develop chemistry with Ben Roethlisberger. Wheaton will need to become a more consistent receiver to earn his playing time.

3. Arthur Moats Vs. Bud Dupree, OLB

The Steelers drafted Bud Dupree to be the outside linebacker of the future. It's unclear if the future is now. Moats played well last year when the Steelers' linebackers were dealing with injuries, making him a contender while Dupree learns the system. Dupree comes into the NFL with a pro-ready body and skill set. It remains to be seen if he can earn a spot from the beginning.

2. Will Allen vs. Shamarko Thomas, S

Who will play opposite Mike Mitchell this year? The Steelers drafted Shamarko Thomas in 2013 with the apparent intention that he would be Troy Polamalu's successor. Thomas hasn't seen the field much, so it's hard to tell what he can do. Will Allen has played a solid backup role, but doesn't look the part of a top-flight safety. This year will answer if Thomas can be a starter or not.

1. Cortez Allen vs. Senquez Golson, CB

The Steelers drafted a pair of corners this year to try and plug a porous secondary. Second-round pick Senquez Golson seems to be the favorite to make a run at a starting job. However, it remains to be seen whether his smaller size can compete with big-bodied NFL receivers. Allen was signed to be a starter, but looked more like a burn victim in coverage. If Allen can regain his form, he will likely win the job, but Golson has an opportunity.
