This week is the last time that the Dallas Cowboys will get together as a team until training camp starts July 30. So this was the last opportunity a lot of players had to make an impression on coaches to help solidify their early spots in position battles once camp actually begins. Having said that, here is a look at the top five takeaways from this week’s minicamp.

Coming into the year everyone knew that with Sean Lee returning from an ACL injury, Rolando McClain returning after having a year to shake off the rust from his early retirement, and with the surprising play of Anthony Hitchens; the Cowboys were going to be set at the linebacker position as far as starters goes. But the active play of both Jasper Brinkley and Keith Rivers this week helps put minds at ease just in case Lee or McClain gets injured

The signing of White from the New Orleans Saints mostly went unnoticed due to the fact he had an off year last season but he is a cornerback who at the tender age of 25 has good size and versatility. He will no longer be asked to be on an island as he was in the blitz happy defense of Rob Ryan and it appears that he may be able to provide an upgrade at the safety position for the Cowboys and can even contribute in the slot.

The top four receiver spots are solidified with Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, and Devin Street but after that it’s wide open. The Cowboys have four undrafted rookies who are all looking to take advantage of opportunity before them. Antwan Goodley, Deontay Greenberry, Lucky Whitehead all made plays this week and even expected frontrunner George Farmer finally showed flashes. Keep an eye on the battle as camp approaches.

After a sensational rookie season, Williams took a step back last year seemingly disappearing for weeks at a time. However this minicamp he came in more focused and appears to be a new player. He has taken up the leadership role with the absence of Dez Bryant and has even been carving up the secondary in practices playing in Bryant’s normal position. You can expect him to return to form in 2015.

Romo hasn’t been able to participate in any offseason training for the past two years due to back surgeries, but this year he has not only been a full participant but has even wowed his coaches in his performance. They will still play it safe when training camp arrives but for now it appears that Romo needs no limitations put on him in regards to the number of throws or practices asked of him.
