Just a month after signing Terrelle Pryor, the Cincinnati Bengals have released the quarterback at the conclusion of the team’s mandatory three-day minicamp. With Pryor no longer competing to backup Andy Dalton, A.J. McCarron is favored to be the backup come the start of the season. McCarron has been getting praise from teammates this offseason as the quarterback has made strides in his recovery from a shoulder soreness that kept him sidelined his entire rookie season.

Pryor was most recently cut by the Kansas City Chiefs after four months on their roster as a backup in 2014. Before that, Pryor worked out for the Seattle Seahawks last offseason, but he was released from the then defending Super Bowl Champions before the season began. Pryor last played 11 games for the Oakland Raiders in 2013 and posted a 3-6 record as a starter.

A shot with the Bengals was thought to be Pryor’s best chance of making an NFL roster by being reunited with former Raiders head coach and now Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson.

Pryor possesses a specific skill set as a passer as well as his speed as a runner. In order for Pryor to succeed in the NFL he requires an offense that is built to support his skillset. At 6-foot-6, Pryor might have a better chance at making an NFL roster this season if he is willing to make a position change to wide receiver. Now that Pryor no longer has a chance to make a roster spot with the Bengals, the quarterback’s chances of playing football in the NFL are becoming limited.

After falling behind McCarron for the Bengals’ backup QB position, Pryor started losing snaps to Josh Johnson for the third-string spot. The 25-year-old quarterback is a long shot to make an NFL roster and unless a team is in dire need for a backup it is unlikely that Pryor will remain in the NFL in 2015.
