Percy Harvin Buffalo Bills Training Camp

Andrew Weber – USA TODAY Sports

It’s safe to say that last season was a major bust for Percy Harvin. After looking so good in Super Bowl XLVIII with the Seattle Seahawks, he played poorly in the first five games of 2014, and as a result he was traded to the New York Jets. His production was better with the Jets, and by the end of the season he looked more comfortable with his role in Rex Ryan’s offense. That’s why he followed Ryan to the Buffalo Bills.

Harvin made a pretty good decision to go to Buffalo. Though the team doesn’t really have a quarterback right now, they do have some solid offensive weaponry. Harvin will likely function as a slot receiver with the Bills, as Sammy Watkins will be the major outside threat for the team while Robert Woods will play opposite him. This will put less pressure on Harvin to be a number one option, which will be beneficial and may allow Harvin to play more like he did with the Minnesota Vikings.

Harvin missed quite a bit of the Bills’ OTAs, but it shouldn’t be too much of a concern. Neither Rex Ryan nor wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal seem to think that Harvin will struggle when he does return to the team. Harvin was involved in Ryan’s offense last season anyway, so he doesn’t really need to learn a new system. Harvin will be in Buffalo working with the team sooner or later, but his absence doesn’t seem to be too worrisome.

The major concern to look out for this season is Harvin’s locker room presence. Harvin reportedly didn’t fit into the Seattle locker room, and he got a reputation of being a head case that wouldn’t buy into a team mentality. Harvin needs to lose the attitude with the Bills, because any locker room issues will capsize the Bills’ team. If he is selfish, then he will be off the team very quickly.

Harvin is primed to have a solid season. He will be able to succeed as the slot receiver and he may see some plays coming out of the backfield as a running back. Harvin also could help produce on special teams if given the opportunity to return kicks, and he will be a major all-purpose weapon for the Buffalo Bills.
