Predicting New York Giants’ 2015 Starters Before Training Camp

As summer approaches, the Giants are about to get into all of their mini-camps and practices. The roster seems to be rounding out, but there are still plenty of position battles to watch -- especially on the defensive side of the ball. Here are the likely starters at every position.

Quarterback: Eli Manning

There are a few positions on the Giants’ roster where there isn’t much competition. Quarterback tops that list. No one other than Eli Manning has even started a game for the Giants in a decade, and nothing is going to change now.

Running Back & Fullback: Rashad Jennings & Henry Hynoski

The Giants will have an impressive trio of RBs this season in Jennings, Andre Williams and Shane Vereen. Based off the situation and game plan, any of those three might be the feature back, but expect Jennings to get most of the starts. Hynoski will have little competition for the starting fullback role.

Wide Receivers: Odell Beckham, Jr. & Victor Cruz

So long as both are healthy (although both currently have their own concerns), they should be locks to be starters. If they’re both fully healthy for Eli by season’s start, expect the Giants’ offense to be better than last season's.

Tight End: Larry Donnell

No longer in a walking boot, last year’s breakout tight end should return to his starting duties this year. Although Jerome Cunningham has been impressing throughout most of camp, it’s likely he doesn’t do enough to overtake Donnell by September.

Offensive Line: Ereck Flowers, Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg, Geoff Schwartz, Marshall Newhouse

The precise order of the line might be one of the biggest question marks for the Giants heading into the season. Right now, this seems like what Tom Coughlin wants to go into the season with; however, don’t be surprised if free agent Jake Long or a cut veteran finds their way into the mix.

Defensive Line: Jason Pierre-Paul, Johnathan Hankins, Cullen Jenkins, Robert Ayers, Jr.

Of the four, Hankins is the only guarantee right now. JPP still needs to sign his tag (or agree to a long-term deal), Jenkins is aging and may be surpassed by Jay Bromley, and Ayers faces good competition in Damontre Moore. With all that said, this is what the Giants will likely put on the field in Week 1.

We’re seeing that things are much more up in the air on the defensive side of the ball than the offensive side. Kennard is just about ready to explode onto the scene in DC Steve Spagnuolo’s attack defense, and in the middle and weakside, Beason and Thomas will be the likely starters. Jameel McClain will pressure each of the latter two LBs for a starting spot, too.

Defensive Backs: Prince Amukamara, Landon Collins, Cooper Taylor, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

Prince and DRC will provide the Giants with a great duo of starting corners. Last year, injuries plagued each of them, and hopefully they’ll be healthy this year. Collins is a lock to start at safety, while Taylor and Nat Berhe slug it out for the other spot.

Special Teams: Steve Weatherford, Josh Brown, Zak DeOssie

All three are locks. It's as simple as that. Beckham and Preston Parker will likely be the punt and kick returners, respectively. Any time you get the ball in Beckham’s hands, he’s a threat to score, but if the Giants choose they want to protect him -- and keep him off special teams -- Rueben Randle will probably handle punts.
