As an undrafted quarterback in the NFL, Tony Romo has accomplished more than anyone could have imagined. He holds a bevy of Dallas Cowboys records, and with three to five years of solid football left in his career, he’ll likely hold nearly every passing record in the Cowboys’ book. Unfortunately, there’s a big elephant in the room when it comes to Romo’s legacy: the lack of a Super Bowl ring.

Like Dan Marino, Romo puts up big numbers year in and year out, but he’s never been put in the “elite” category due to his postseason record. Unlike Marino, however, Romo has never won an MVP. He’ll likely be asked to carry the offense more in 2015 than in 2014 without DeMarco Murray in the backfield, something he’s been asked to do in the past. With that in mind, is Romo more likely to win a Super Bowl or an MVP in 2015?

If I were to cast my vote, I’d say he has a better chance of winning a Super Bowl in 2015 over an MVP — and I’d bet Romo would rather have the ring instead of the award. Unlike the MVP, winning a Super Bowl takes a whole team effort. The Cowboys are coming off of a 12-4 season and have seemingly improved in nearly every way except at the running back position. The defense is loaded with new talent added in the offseason. Heck, even the already-great offensive line got better by way of rookie La’el Collins.

Don’t get me wrong, Romo has all the weapons and ability to win an MVP award. I just think the Cowboys will maintain a commitment to the running game in 2015, as they should. Romo will probably throw 30 touchdown passes and have a passer rating at or above 95, which any NFL team would take from their quarterback  in a heartbeat. If Romo can maintain those numbers as he has in the past, Dallas should be poised for a playoff berth, with a good chance to make a Super Bowl run.

A Super Bowl in this season would vault Romo’s name into the company of the game’s greats. It’d be impossible not to. He can move into the top 15 in career touchdown passes this season, and he already has the second-best career passer rating, trailing just Aaron Rodgers.

Although an MVP for Romo would be incredible, a Super Bowl victory would change Romo’s legacy forever — and 2015 is Dallas’ best chance to make that happen.
