Jacksonville Jaguars 2015 Training Camp Profile: QB Blake Bortles

Blake Bortles

Phil Sears – USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars made several key additions this offseason in free agency and the draft and appear poised to take a leap forward in 2015. However, if the team is truly going to take the next step, it likely hinges on the development of second-year quarterback Blake Bortles.

Bortles’ development will begin during training camp, where he will be working in a new offense with a handful of new weapons and a crop of young receivers.

Following an up-and-down rookie season which saw Bortles turn the ball over 18 times, it was clear the Jaguars needed to invest in the offensive side of the ball this offseason. That started with the addition of new offensive coordinator Greg Olson.

A journeyman coach, Olson spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders. Following his success last season with Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr, it is easy to see why the Jaguars targeted Olson to help their young signal-caller take his game to the next level.

The changes did not stop with Olson. The Jaguars added arguably the most talented offensive skill player in free agency in tight end Julius Thomas. A dynamic weapon in any offense, Thomas should pair with veteran Marcedes Lewis to help give Bortles a couple of reliable targets at tight end.

The Jaguars also return a talented trio of second-year wideouts. Allen Robinson is a breakout candidate following an injury-shortened rookie year. Allen Hurns showed plenty of promise as an undrafted free agent. Marqise Lee has playmaking potential as long as he can stay healthy. Even third-year wide receiver Ace Sanders appears poised for a return to form following a disappointing year both on and off the field.

Unlike last offseason, Bortles will enter training camp as the unquestioned starter ahead of veteran Chad Henne.

This season has all the makings of a breakout year for the Jaguars and Bortles. If all goes as planned the Jaguars could be a team that surprises quite a few people in 2015.
