Yesterday, the San Francisco 49ers sent out a simple message of love and support to the LGBT community by hashtagging a rainbow-edited version of their logo “#LoveWins.”
Today, a member of their team is continuing to fight the good fight for the respect of human rights. Torrey Smith took to social media to address controversial issues that have been rearing their heads in America as of late. Via his personal Twitter account, he reminded the world of the dehumanization and torment that the Confederate Flag stood for and criticized those who choose to continue to waive it in honor of “Southern Pride.”
You can have “Southern Pride” without waving a defeated flag that dehumanized an entire race

He also went on to address his disgust with some of the hateful comments he has seen regarding these issues.
The type of conversations/comments that happen over the confederate flag proves we have a long way to go…same for gay marriage

It’s a huge thing when an athlete is willing to step up and be a voice for those who don’t have the same type of platform to stand on. Whether intending to or not, Smith has made the NFL and the 49ers proud. Such a powerful organization with such a huge outreach has the opportunity to make a massive impact on social issues such as these.
Today was another win for the LGBT community, and no matter how small an act, Smith has done his part in contributing to that win.
