Recently, Mark Brunell was on ESPN and was asked by host Stephen A. Smith, if he thinks Robert Griffin III is good enough to succeed in the NFL, Brunell answered, “I do not,” Brunell then continued “From what I’ve seen the last couple of years — listen, he burst onto the scene and that was impressive — but like I said, he has gone backwards. It’s not just his decision-making, it’s his fundamentals. He’s taking too many hits and is quick to get out of the pocket. Last year, was difficult to watch. Does he have the skillset? Yes, but we haven’t seen it in some time.”

Before he came to the Washington Redskins, Brunell also had some good success with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He then played quarterback for the Redskins for four years where he had some decent results, leading the Redskins to the playoffs in 2005 with a 10-6 record. Thus, he has some credibility when he talks about quarterback play. Brunell himself was a quarterback that was mobile outside the pocket who then had to adjust to passing within the pocket.

The Redskins still believe that he can succeed on an elite level, however, Brunell does bring up some valid points. Griffin’s fundamentals are in serious disarray, his accuracy is suspect, and his decision-making is subpar. He has been very inconsistent over the past four years, giving the city only glimpses of stardom.

Brunell is absolutely correct when he said that it is a make-or-break season for him. If RG3 doesn’t fix these inconsistencies, then his NFL career will be over. He will be the new Michael Vick, just a glorified back up bouncing around from team to team. The city has a lot riding on RG3. Most of the media, critics, and analysts do not believe that he will live up to his expectations and that he will be out of Washington following the 2015-16 season. There is more added pressure each day for Griffin. How much can his shoulders bear? For the sake of the team, he needs to keep his mental state of mind very strong.

Ultimately RG3 makes his own destiny. He has all the weapons to succeed this coming season and if he fails, it will be solely on him and no one else. I think RG3 is good enough to succeed in the NFL. We know what he is capable of following his Rookie season and I don’t think that it was a fluke. Yes, he has had some obstacles along way, but this coming season Griffin will prove to Brunell and the NFL that he is an elite quarterback.
