The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Toby Gerhart last offseason with the hope that he could become the bell-cow running back their offense had been lacking under head coach Gus Bradley. In his first chance to be an every-down back in the NFL, Gerhart fell well short of expectations after sustaining an injury in the season opener.

Gerhart’s misfortune turned out to be a blessing in disguise for young running back Denard Robinson. A former college quarterback, Robinson proved that he is capable of being an NFL-caliber running back in 2014.

Robinson brought life to the Jaguars’ rushing attack and finished the season with 582 yards and four touchdowns. His great quickness and vision allowed him to be used in a variety of ways.

Despite Robinson’s progress, it was clear the Jaguars were still lacking the every-down back they desired. Looking to take the running game to the next level, the Jaguars used their second-round draft pick on running back T.J. Yeldon. This has led to questions about Robinson’s future role within the offense.

Yeldon has already been penciled in as the starter and Gerhart is expected to work in as an H-back. Where does that leave Robinson?

Heading into training camp, the plan will be to work Robinson in as the top backup at running back, but he is also going to get a look as a kick returner. For his career, the former fifth-round pick has an average of 22 yards on just four returns, but with the departure of Jordan Todman in free agency, the team has a need at the position.

While Robinson may not be destined to be the Jaguars’ starter at running back, it is clear he remains a part of their long-term plans.
