Green Bay Packers 2015 Training Camp Profile: Randall Cobb

The Green Bay Packers did quarterback Aaron Rodgers a favor by bringing back receiver Randall Cobb. Cobb is one of the most versatile receivers in the NFL and will most likely reward the Packers with another stellar season.

After breaking his leg in the 2013 season, Cobb came back better than ever and posted career highs in multiple receiving categories. He had a career-highs in receptions (91), receiving yards (1,287) and receiving touchdowns (12). He certainly played like an all-around type of receiver.

The 24-year-old Cobb can play anywhere on the field. He has lined up as a wideout, as a slot receiver and the Packers have sometimes motioned him into the backfield to be a running back. He has speed and quickness that makes him a threat on short and deep routes. He can create separation with his quickness and crisp route running on short routes to then blow past defenders on deep routes.

The Packers re-signed Cobb to a four-year, $40 million deal which keeps arguably the best receiving duo in the NFL intact. Wide receiver Jordy Nelson had a better season than Cobb with 98 receptions for 1,519 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns. Together, the Packers’ passing attack was virtually unstoppable. The team also has wideout Davante Adams, who had a solid rookie season, and tight end Andrew Quarless.

The Packers have also used Cobb as a kickoff returner. However, he has slowly been removed from those duties because of his rising value in the team’s offensive scheme. The Packers will still use him as a returner but only sporadically. They need to keep Cobb healthy so he can play every down on offense. There is no need to risk his injury in the return game.

Cobb is still young, but he might be one of top 10 receivers in the NFL. There is no reason to believe he will see a decline in his production. The Packers will continue to use his unique set of skills and give him as many touches on offense as they can. It would be surprising if Cobb does not see an increase in all of his statistics again this season. The Packers probably expect Cobb to surpass his career highs again, especially with Rodgers still throwing the ball to him.
