Jay Cutler Primed For Bounce-Back Season With Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears underwent wholesale roster, and front office, changes this offseason. The team fired general manager Phil Emery and replaced him with Ryan Pace, who spent 14 seasons in the New Orleans Saints‘ front office, including the last two as team’s director of player personnel. Also sent packing were head coach Marc Trestman, offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, replaced by John Fox, Adam Gase and Vic Fangio, respectively. With the new regime in town, I expect a big year from quarterback Jay Cutler.

Pace’s first order of business was to trade Brandon Marshall to the New York Jets in an attempt to keep Cutler from forcing the ball into tight windows to Marshall. Ever since the two played with the Denver Broncos together, Cutler has had a habit of throwing the ball into double or triple coverage to Marshall, as he felt like he was always open. With Marshall now in New York, it will allow Cutler to go through his progressions more regularly and find the open receiver.

The Bears drafted Marshall’s replacement with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, West Virginia wide receiver Kevin White. White matches up physically with Marshall in terms of size, but he’s more explosive and better with the ball after the catch. With White joining Alshon Jeffery, Eddie Royal and potential breakout candidate Marquess Wilson, Cutler will have no shortage of weapons to target.

Gase might be the biggest reason why I believe Cutler is ready for a big season in 2015. Gase spent the last two seasons as the Broncos offensive coordinator, and two seasons prior, he was the Broncos quarterback coach. Gase has spent the last three seasons working with Peyton Manning, and Manning thinks highly of Gase’s ability as a coordinator. If Manning approves of Gase’s offensive philosophies and teachings, then he should be able to do wonders with Cutler.

Another factor that should help Cutler, and the Bears offense in general, improve is the progression of the defense under Fangio. Fangio was the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator the last four seasons, and they never ranked lower than fifth in the NFL in total defense while he was in charge. With the Bears defense set to drastically improve, it will take some of the pressure off of the offense to feel like they have to score on every possession.

This is the best set of circumstances that Cutler has had in a long time, so if he fails, it could be his last chance as a starting quarterback in the NFL. If he succeeds, like I believe he will, the Bears could instantly provide a threat to the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers in the NFC North.
