New York Jets Camp Profile Darrelle Revis

It is often said you can’t go home again. In the case of NFL superstar Darrelle Revis, that is not necessarily true. Revis was the 14th pick of the New York Jets out of Pittsburgh in the 2007 draft. After stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New England Patriots, Revis re-signed with Gang Green in March. Now the All-Pro cornerback will try to wind down his career with a few more great seasons in Gotham. With a few days left before his 30th birthday, can Revis still play like a superhero?

Without a doubt Revis will be one of the starters at corner for the Jets. His reputation and a guaranteed $39 million contract cemented that. Opposite of Revis will be his old friend from Jets’ days gone by, Antonio Cromartie. The former Florida State star rejoined the Jets after a season with the Arizona Cardinals. This terrific twosome wreaked havoc on the rest of the AFC East in their first run together. Much of the Jets’ success this season depends on that duo doing it again. Backing up Revis will be disappointing former first-round choice, Dee Milliner.

New York has a new head coach in Todd Bowles. The outstanding former defensive coordinator loves to bring the heat on defense with his front seven. The best way to do that is to have confidence in the cornerbacks to cover one-on-one. Revis has made a career out of doing just that by shutting down his side of the field. Any receiver who dares to vacation on “Revis Island” usually comes home a beaten man.

The impact Revis has on his defense is invaluable. The Jets learned that when they traded him to Tampa two years ago and tried to replace him with Milliner among others. Maybe the veteran can lend some much-needed expertise to the former Alabama defensive back. Coach Bowles is also hoping that Revis can remain one of the league’s dominant defenders as he enters his thirties. There is little reason to believe that he won’t be.

Revis was the ultimate hired gun last season in New England. He definitely did what was expected of him in one season and helped make the Patriots’ defense Super Bowl worthy. It had to upset the collective stomachs of all Jets fans to watch Revis revel in another Patriots’ championship trophy ceremony. Now that he is back in his first NFL home, Revis can show that New York is where his heart is. He’ll also show that the Jets were smart by signing him to his last large contract.
