The New York Jets didn’t necessarily need help on the defensive line heading into the 2015 NFL Draft, but USC DE Leonard Williams fell to No. 6 overall and the Jets were there with open arms waiting to catch him.

Since the selection, fellow DL Sheldon Richardson has been suspended for the first four games of the 2015 season after a positive marijuana test, and the franchise has yet to settle on a contract extension with DE Muhammad Wilkerson. Thus, Williams’ presence on the Jets roster is now worth its weight in gold.

Williams is guaranteed to start for the Jets come Week 1 with Richardson unavailable. He’ll be thrown right into the mix and be relied on heavily to produce from day one. That’s part of why Jets’ camp will be one you want to follow this summer, as extra emphasis must be placed on expediting Williams’ development.

Williams is not in an ideal scenario whatsoever currently, as you would think as a rookie, he’ll be looking to Wilkerson to show him the ropes throughout camp. However, an unhappy Wilkerson has no obligation to go out of his way to help Williams, especially considering he could essentially be training his own replacement if the Jets ultimately fail to give him the contract extension he wants and deserves.

Sure, Wilkerson is a stand-up guy who often puts the team first, but even the nicest guy in the world knows it would be silly to train his own job replacement.

Although the Jets defensive line is operating under a cloud of confusion this summer, there’s one thing we know for certain. At 6-foot-5, 290 pounds, Williams is among the most physically gifted lineman in the NFL prior to even seeing his first snap in the league.

Going on the premise that after the suspension Richardson will get back on track, and Wilkerson’s contract will be taken care of, there’s reason to believe this three-headed monster will be on its way to big things. This should be the case since the Jets play in the AFC East, which is hardly laden with overwhelming offensive lines.

Keep an eye on Williams this summer as he attempts to glide through the adversity. Williams has the talent to be a Pro Bowl lineman within his second year, so you’ll be seeing the birth of what should be quite a career.
