For the first time in over a decade, the Chicago Bears will have a Pro Bowl caliber player manning a spot at safety. The last to do so in the Windy City was Mike Brown in 2005. Antrel Rolle signed a three-year deal with the Bears this offseason in hopes to solidify the back-end of Chicago’s secondary.

The 11-year veteran will not only help improve the Bears’ play on defense, but he will also bring a much-needed winning attitude to a ball club that has been to the playoffs only once in the past eight years. Rolle has played in two Super Bowls, winning one in 2011 with the New York Giants.

It’s evident that the three-time Pro Bowler will beat out veterans Malcolm Bronson, Sherrod Martin, Brock Vereen and rookie Adrian Amos for a starting position. The other obvious thing is that Rolle will be reunited with fellow safety Ryan Mundy in the starting lineup. Both Rolle and Mundy were the starting safeties for the Giants in 2013.

The Bears could greatly benefit from Rolle’s versatility as well. The 2005 first-round draft pick can possibly help out at cornerback if need be, since that was the position he played for the first three seasons of his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals. However, Rolle will have a much bigger impact at safety.

After having the third-worst pass defense in the league in 2014, and settling for below-average play at safety from players such as Chris Conte and Major Wright over the past few years, the Bears can now look forward to having a reliable presence with Rolle.
