Last season may not have gone as the San Diego Chargers had hoped due to unforeseen injuries to the offensive line and defense, finishing just 9-7 once again under head coach Mike McCoy. But the beauty of sports is that when one season goes awry, you can come into the next and start anew. Here are the 10 reasons why Chargers fans should be excited for the 2015 NFL season.

The Chargers' schedule ranks in the middle of the pack being the 16th toughest in 2015. That might not be that easy, but considering the rest of their division all ranks within the top 10, Chargers fans should be optimistic.

Talks of moving a team to Los Angeles have seemed to calm down, at least for now. Which is good news if you root for the Chargers, seeing as how the team has been among those discussed to move to Los Angeles as a new franchise. While it's not a forgone conclusion that the Chargers will be in San Diego for years to come, fans have their team for at least two more years.

The Chargers will not return with future Hall-of-Fame LB Dwight Freeney or Jarret Johnson at outside linebacker, but that's okay. They have a solid corps now with Donald Butler, Manti Te'o and Melvin Ingram. All of these guys have worked in the offseason on getting into better shape to be healthy for the entire season. Jeremiah Attaochu, Kavell Connor and Cordarro Law will help to add depth, and don't forget about rookie Denzel Perryman,

Patrick Robinson comes from a system in New Orleans where he was used to being a starter, and quite frankly, a good one at that. He's won a Super Bowl as well, so he comes in with leadership and versatile ability. His main job will be to cover the slot receivers with his quickness and pass defense talents. However, don't be surprised to see him rotating in as a starter later in the season.

Well, Antonio Gates is out for the first four games to PED use, which means it's Ladarius Green's time to shine in the NFL. Many people were high on Green last year as it was unsure if Antonio Gates had anything left in the tank. Gates put those thoughts to rest, but now Green gets his shot to prove his value to the offense. Green's first four matchups come against Detroit, Cincinnati, Minnesota and Cleveland, so look for him to produce.

Coming into the offseason it wasn't sure what Eric Weddle's future with the team was going to be, and it still might not be 100 percent certain with contract negotiations at a halt. The fact remains that Weddle is with San Diego now, and he is expected to report to training camp after attending minicamp. Weddle is the Chargers anchor on defense and their best defensive back. If they are going to be a threat this season, they need Weddle on board.

Mike McCoy hasn't had a horrible start in his head coaching year. Both seasons the Chargers have gone 9-7, and even in the first year he got them into the playoffs. But the expectations this year are there for the Chargers to compete well into the playoffs in their third year in McCoy's system. This is now his team, and they've made moves, gotten healthier and have the franchise quarterback. The third year's the charm.

Let's be honest, although Philip Rivers hasn't really won anything, any team would be happy to have this man as their franchise quarterback. Rivers comes into his 12th season with his eye on the prize -- to win a Super Bowl. He has numerous weapons on offense to make this team a competitive threat in the AFC West. As long as Rivers is quarterbacking, the Chargers always have a shot.

Manning is possibly in his last year with Denver. Kansas City is going through changes on offense and defense. Who knows what the Raiders will be in 2015. The AFC West is there for the taking this year, and with the Chargers returning most of their core and adding some pieces to provide depth at running back, offensive line and defensive back, there's no reason to think they can't finish atop their division this season.

San Diego fans should be rejoicing that Melvin Gordon has arrived. Last year the Chargers had the 30th ranked rushing attack. This year they bring in the rookie from Wisconsin who some have been comparing to Jamaal Charles. And that isn't crazy when you consider he ran for 49 touchdowns and had an FBS-record 7.8 yards per carry for his career. For a team that hasn't had a dominant runner since LaDainian Tomlinson, all eyes will be on Gordon.
