There is no doubt that the 2015 NFL season could be very exciting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Drafting Jameis Winston has created a buzz and a real sense of hope among the fans. After seeing Mike Evans catch 12 TDs with Josh McCown and Mike Glennon throwing the ball to him, what could he do with a Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback? Yes, the Bucs’ passing game should improve in 2015, but no matter how talented Winston and Evans are, they will be relying on a very shaky offensive line to anchor the team.

Maybe McCown could be blamed for the Bucs 25th ranked passing attack in 2014, but the 29th ranked running game was definitely the offensive line’s fault. They didn’t just have trouble moving the ball on the ground, though. The Bucs’ front line allowed 52 sacks last year, tied for third most in the league. Whether it was Doug Martin getting stuffed behind the line of scrimmage or McCown only having two seconds to throw the ball, it often looked like no Buc player ever had a chance to advance the ball.

The Bucs made several moves in the 2014 offseason in an effort to improve the offensive line, but they obviously didn’t translate to success. They spent two second-round picks on offensive linemen in this year’s draft (Donovan Smith and Ali Marpet), but will rookies be able to help one of the worst lines in the league? The Bucs really have no other options than to hope for just that.

Logan Mankins and Demar Dotson are the only certain starters right now. Evan Smith will probably start at center, but I’m sure the Bucs wish they had another option. If all goes well, the two rookies will insert themselves into the starting lineup, but if they struggle then the Bucs could be in for another long season.

It would be a shame to see Winston spend his rookie season running away from free-roaming pass rushers and worrying more about staying upright instead of going through his progressions. However, this is a real concern the Bucs must prepare for. With even an average offensive line, there is enough talent at the skill positions to be a scary offense.

Will Bucs fans be able to see what this team is capable of with Winston at the helm, or will it just be another frustrating season? Right now it is hard to see this offensive line being good, but maybe they can be competent enough to give the team a chance.
