This offseason, the Chicago Bears have signed a number of free agents to one-year deals in hopes to turn things around after a dismal 5-11 record in 2014. Among those newcomers on the Bears’ roster is former Atlanta Falcons running back Jacquizz Rodgers.

Over the past several years, the bulk of Chicago’s running game has been put on the shoulders of Matt Forte. Now, that offensive approach may be a thing of the past. The Bears have brought in John Fox as their new head coach, and he is known for using multiple running backs in his ground attack. Although Rodgers was brought in to add depth to Chicago’s backfield, there is a good chance that he won’t be Forte’s primary backup.

The players who have the best chance at being the Bears’ No. 2 running back are Ka’Deem Carey and rookie Jeremy Langford. The 5-foot-6, 196-pound Rodgers is better equipped to be a third-down back in long-yardage situations. In addition, the five-year veteran should also have a shot as a return man on special teams.

During Rodgers’ four years in Atlanta, he was the Falcons’ primary returner on kickoffs for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. It wasn’t until 2014 that Devin Hester joined the Falcons and relieved Rodgers from his special teams duties. The only player who will pose a threat to Rodgers during Chicago’s training camp later this month is Marc Mariani, who signed with the Bears late last season.

Since being in the NFL, Rodgers has never had 100 carries in a season. That trend will definitely continue in 2015. However, Rodgers’ impact as a receiver out of the backfield, and in the return game, will still be huge for the Bears’ success this year.
