The New England Patriots head into training camp under a cloud of confusion currently. We just don’t know if they can rely on Tom Brady‘s four-game suspension for involvement in Deflategate being reduced even by one game. Thus, as a decision concerning his appeal drags into training camp, all eyes will be fixated on Jimmy Garoppolo to see if he gels with the Patriots’ weapons like WR Julian Edelman.

Edelman had a stellar 2014 campaign for New England. He accumulated 92 receptions for 972 yards and four TDs, as he served as a possession receiver (and security blanket) for Brady. Although he somewhat fizzled out as the season went along, it was more indicative of Rob Gronkowski‘s domination than it was anything to do with Edelman being “washed up” or “not any good” like many outrageous whispers from his naysayers claimed.

The Patriots don’t have any receivers on their roster expected to take looks away from Edelman and Brandon LaFell in 2015. Danny Amendola showed sings of life down the stretch last season, but he hasn’t been a guy Bill Belichick can rely on to stay healthy or play well. Thus, Edelman will play his typical role, and produce as one of the best possession receivers in the NFL.

Sure, it might take some time for Edelman to get used to playing with a different quarterback if it’s indeed Garoppolo starting the season for the Patriots as expected. Timing and precision are incredibly important dynamics in the quarterback/slot-receiver relationship. And that’s what makes Patriots training camp a must-follow this summer.

Obviously, with the aforementioned uncertainty surrounding Brady’s status, and a new QB other than Brady possibly starting in Week 1 for the Patriots for the first time in 13 years, you’re going to want your eyes fixated on the chaos that will be Patriots training camp.
