Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Cole Beasley had a breakout season last year as he finally became comfortable with what his role was on the team. And as the year went on, he also finally began to realize what his potential. It’s not that his numbers were drastically different from years two and three in the league, it’s just that the timing of his receptions were.

In 2013, he had 39 receptions for 368 yards and two touchdowns; he then followed that up by collecting 37 receptions for 420 yards and four touchdowns in the 2014 season. But it’s like I mentioned earlier, most of his grabs in that 2014 season came in key situations. Quarterback Tony Romo began to rely on him as an additional security blanket whenever he needed a big catch on third down or if he was looking to ice a game late. Each time Beasley was called upon, he delivered.

As he enters training camp this season, he will look to establish himself as one of the elite slot receivers in the league. He is already drawing comparisons to Wes Welker as he can use his size and his speed to slip past any potential jams off the line and he get out in the open for a big gain once he catches the ball.

His spot is already fairly secure on the team, especially given the fact he signed a new contract this offseason, but if he were to face any potential competition for playing time it would come in the form of second-year player Devin Street. Street is seen as more of a receiver who would play on the outside due to his size but injuries can and do occur, so you can certainly bet that he will be given a few reps on the slot position just in case he is needed there.

There is also the possibility of Dez Bryant sitting out a few games to protest the fact that he didn’t get a long-term deal this offseason, and this could force Beasley to move up to the No. 2 receiver spot which is normally occupied by Terrence Williams, but everyone that is associated with the Cowboys sees this as a long shot.

So expect Beasley to put his focus squarely on perfecting his craft this training camp so that he can hopefully take his level of play up yet another notch this year.
