Colin Kaepernick Crazy to Think Offseason Changes Make 49ers Better

If there is one team that has to be somewhat worried about what to expect once the 2015 NFL season kicks off, it is the San Francisco 49ers. A new head coach, countless unexpected roster changes and a new offensive and defensive scheme means there will be plenty of unknown going forward. Even though it appears on the surface that the 49ers should be worried about the changes, quarterback Colin Kaepernick is convinced it will all be for the better.

“Very excited for the season,” Kaepernick said, according to the Nevada Appeal. “A lot of new faces in the locker room and a lot of new coaches. I think the changes are for the good.”

One can only assume Kaepernick’s comment about how “the changes are for the good” is his attempt to bolster the confidence of the team, because the reality is that is far from the truth.

There is no question losing Jim Harbaugh will have a drastic effect on the team. He used his ridiculous amount of energy to motivate his players and drive them to the best of their abilities. The result was three consecutive NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl during his tenure. No offense to Jim Tomsula but that is a hard act to follow.

Then, there are the losses of Patrick Willis, Justin Smith and Chris Borland to retirement. With Willis and Smith gone, the team lost a huge chunk of their veteran leadership. That is not good when the head coach was forced out before the start of the offseason. Despite stud running back Frank Gore and offensive guard Mike Iupati not retiring, they still signed with other teams in free agency. Two more big losses as far as the players are concerned.

The new offensive scheme theoretically has the chance to help Kaepernick’s game. However, that means taking away from the running attack to put the ball more in his hands. Kaepernick has shown flashes of talent, but he is far from a quarterback a team should want throwing the ball 30 times in a game.

Kaepernick can say all he wants about the “confidence” he has in the 49ers, but the truth is the team will struggle to reach .500 again. When it boils down to it, he is crazy to think the offseason changes will somehow make San Francisco better going forward.
