Since their Super Bowl victory in 2005, the Pittsburgh Steelers have only two offensive players who are left from that roster. It is easy to guess one of those remaining players: quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Most people seem to forget a rookie from the University of Virginia named Heath Miller was the starting tight end on that team.

Throughout his twelve seasons in Pittsburgh, Miller’s talents seem to be ignored by the average football fan outside of Pittsburgh. The average fan would not realize that Miller has been elected to the Pro Bowl twice, is six receptions away from becoming second on the Steelers’ franchise reception list and is one of ten tight ends with at least 500 receptions in his career. Miller owns every tight end record for the Steelers.

He remains one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL, while being Ben’s main target on a third and six. On a team with Antonio Brown‘s speed and Martavis Bryant‘s size, Miller remains the guy who will push a drive forward.

He also remains a guy who virtually lives in the middle of the field. While other pass catching tight ends spread to the outside like a wide receiver, Pittsburgh already have three different outside targets. The vast majority of Miller’s plays are middle of the field plays. He is a throwback to a previous generation that can still be effective today.

Last season’s 88 receptions and 761 receiving yards are evidence that at the age of 32, Miller is not slowing down. He is still one of the most productive tight ends in the league. His blocking can still open up the hole for All-Pro Le’Veon Bell. In a more spread out offense, Miller will be getting more targets as the defensive backs will be more focused on Brown, Bryant and Markus Wheaton. Barring injury, Miller’s numbers will continue to demonstrate that he is a legendary tight end.
