Collusion Between Dallas Cowboys And Denver Broncos Can Work To Dez Bryant’s Benefit

The NFLPA is investigating whether or not there was collusion between the Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos in respect to the contracts of wideouts Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas. If they find these reports to be true, they will file a complaint as this violates the collective bargaining agreement.

The obvious negative side of this is the possibility of the two teams working together to make sure they don’t create a market value for the position that would otherwise get out of hand. They could make sure that they both go to the negotiating table with a number that they are comfortable with, and therefore give both Bryant and Thomas offers that are well below what they were hoping for.

While this is possible, the NFLPA and the players’ agents must realize that neither team can realistically offer the talented receivers a contract below what the top five receivers in the game are currently getting — and expect them to accept it.

If both teams are so apprehensive about the possibility of offering a potentially crippling deal to their star receivers that they feel the need to work together on it, this is actually more of a benefit to the players than it is a negative. Working together to give both receivers a deal that they are comfortable with increases the likelihood of them actually getting a deal done before the July 15 deadline.

If neither team is comfortable with offering a lucrative deal for fear that they will be overpaying, then they will stick with what they consider to be the safest option for them, and that’s the one-year franchise tag. It is clear that players do not like playing under the franchise tag as there is no long-term security for them, and Bryant is a player who would certainly be included in this group.

So if I were Bryant, I would be ecstatic over the fact that the two teams are working together, as this means the Cowboys are more likely to work with him to get him the long-term deal that he so desperately desires.
