The Green Bay Packers are entering the 2015 season with very high expectations surrounding them. They are considered to be one of the front-runners to win the Super Bowl and the players themselves believe that they have what it takes to make a deep run at representing the NFC in the big game.

One of the only question marks on the Packers’ offense is the tight end position, and they will need one of their two tight ends to step up. Andrew Quarless has been very vocal about wanting to take a leap forward this year, but he also got into off-the-field trouble after firing off a gun after an altercation in Florida. The other option for the Packers is talented second-year tight end Richard Rodgers.

Last season with the Packers, Rodgers ended up catching 20 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. They aren’t huge numbers, but he showed a lot of raw potential and is ready to break out in his second season and become the big target that Aaron Rodgers needs to round out his offensive arsenal.

At 6-foot-4 and 257 pounds, Rodgers is without question the type of size that the Packers need at the tight end position. He may not possess quite as much athleticism as Quarless does, but he is very solid and hasn’t come close to reaching his full potential. Rodgers is a very good route runner, which is an area that Green Bay will be able to use him to their advantage.

Aaron Rodgers is coming off of an MVP winning season, and is looking to go for back-to-back awards. He doesn’t need a superstar tight end, but he does need a consistent presence at the position to compliment the other weapons that he has to work with this season. Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb and Davante Adams are going to receive most of the targets, but having a big security blanket is exactly what Rodgers can provide to the offense.

If Rodgers wants to step up and win the Packers’ starting tight end job, he is going to need to improve a couple areas of his game.

First of all, dropping just a few pounds and coming in at better shape to make himself a bit quicker and more athletic would be a big step in the right direction. Quarless has the speed and athleticism that Rodgers just didn’t quite have last year, but he is capable of working himself up to that level.

Secondly, improving a bit more as a pass and run blocker would be a nice development as well. He showed promise in that area when he was given the chance, but it would be a way that he could separate himself from Quarless.

All of that being said, there is good reason for the Packers and their fans to be excited to see what Rodgers is able to bring to the field in his second NFL season. Green Bay was very high on him throughout last season, and their coaching staff is excellent at developing young talent. Expect to see his hard work throughout the offseason pay off, and don’t be surprised if he’s able to beat out Quarless for the starting tight end job at some point in the season.
