Dwayne Allen A Forgotten Threat For The Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts haven’t been as excited about an upcoming season as they are about the 2015 campaign in quite some time. General manager Ryan Grigson went out and brought in a lot of talent in free agency, and Andrew Luck is poised to lead one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. He now has both Andre Johnson and T.Y. Hilton on the wide receiver depth chart, to go along with other weapons like Coby Fleener, Donte Moncrief and Phillip Dorsett.

One of the most forgotten weapons that the Colts have is fourth-year tight end Dwayne Allen. He is reportedly down 13 pounds from last season and is ready to play at a faster pace which will fit the Indianapolis offense nicely.

Last season with the Colts, Allen ended up catching 29 passes for 395 yards and eight touchdowns. He took a back seat to Fleener at the tight end position, but there is no question that he brings a different dynamic to the field. Luck has always loved targeting him in the red zone, and Allen possesses the type of route running and size that the Colts will need at times from the tight end position.

Offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton is going to have the easiest job in the world this season. Now that the Colts have put together the NFL’s best passing offense, they now have Frank Gore on the ground to balance out the offense. That alone will help the passing game get going even more effectively and also could be the way that Allen earns his way onto the field. While Fleener is more athletic and has improved as a receiver in the open field, he still has not improved his run or pass blocking.

At 25 years old, there is no limit to the potential that Allen still has to reach during the upcoming season. He is entering the prime of his career and is one of the favorite targets of one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. There is no question that he is capable of taking his numbers to a new level and living up to the hype that surrounded him as a rookie.

All of that being said, it just goes to show how deep the Colts are on the offensive side of the football. Allen would be more than capable of starting and being a major difference maker for almost any team in the NFL, yet his name isn’t talked about much due to the fact that he is on the Colts’ roster. Expect to see him have a breakout season in 2015 and be a difference maker for Luck and the Colts’ offense.
