New York Giants 2015 Training Camp Profile: Andre Williams

The New York Giants received a pleasant surprise when running back Andre Williams put on a solid rookie campaign. Williams is ready to build off of his first season and continue to move forward in the 2015 season. If he continues to improve, he can possibly become the Giants’ next starting running back.

The Giants selected Williams in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. While he did have a subpar 3.3 yards per carry average, he managed to score seven touchdowns. He had 721 rushing yards total, which is a solid contribution for a running back in his first season. His production last season could mean he sees more time on the field this season.

The Giants have running back Rashad Jennings who entered last season as the starter. However, Jennings was unable to stay healthy throughout the season, which gave Williams the opportunity to play. The Giants will look to use both Jennings and Williams often throughout the season, but they will also need to find time to fit in Shane Vereen.

The Giants signed Vereen away from the New England Patriots due to his receiving capabilities out of the backfield. He’s much better at catching the ball than Jennings and Williams. The versatility of Vereen could cut into how often Williams plays. The Giants seem content with making Jennings and Vereen as their primary backs and then using Williams in a minor role.

Williams will most likely be used in short-yardage plays like near the end zone or third-and-short situations. He is a big running back, so these types of situations are where he is most effective. The Giants probably view Williams like they did with former former running back Brandon Jacobs. Like Jacobs, Williams has great size but lacks the overall speed and explosiveness needed to be an every down type of back.

There is no question Williams has talent and potential. However, his speed and explosiveness are not to the point where the Giants are ready to make him the primary ball carrier. This season will serve as a proving ground for Williams. He needs to be patient and wait for his opportunities. When he gets his opportunities, he needs to make the most of them and display improved quickness and speed.
