NFLPA Demanding Tom Brady’s Entire Suspension Lifted Nothing More Than Wishful Thinking

The NFL Players Association has insisted they will fight for New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady until his four-game suspension becomes a zero-game suspension. In fact, if so much as one game remains on the suspension after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reveals his ruling on Brady’s involvement in “Deflategate,” the NFLPA plans to fight it in federal court.

Brady, whether he actually told Patriots personnel to purposefully deflate the footballs prior to the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts, is in trouble because he denied having any knowledge of the situation. Even though the Wells Report talked in terms of “more probable than not” when discussing Brady’s involvement, there is no denying that he had some sort of an idea of what was happening.

The NFLPA will continue to use the Wells Report discussing its findings with a lack of conclusive evidence as their main arguing point. According to ESPN, the NFLPA will also use the following points if the appeal verdict does land in federal court:

The ball-deflation policy was incorrectly applied to Brady as the rules were meant for club personnel and not players. If it is determined the ball-deflation policy did apply to Brady, the league failed to give him notice of the penalty, in essence making up the punishment with precedent. The NFL doesn’t have proper techniques and standards for measure deflation of footballs, and Goodell should have recused himself as the arbitrator for Brady’s appeal hearing.

Despite the Patriots being convinced they are innocent, it is hard to imagine Brady’s suspension being reduced to nothing. One can only assume Goodell will remove two of the suspended games and replace them with a hefty fine. However, reducing the suspension to nothing is ludicrous when it has already been proven Brady had a general knowledge of what was happening during the deflation process. Even though Brady is determined to show his innocence, he may accept the fine and move on with the season.

Goodell stated he plans to reveal his findings of the investigation soon, with some believing it could come at some point this week.
