This offseason has been very active for the Buffalo Bills. The team was on the verge of playoff contention last season, and they were really in the spotlight this offseason after hiring Rex Ryan and developing one of the more interesting quarterback battles in the league. There are a lot of rumors swirling around about the team, but here are the five most important topics heading into training camp.

It’s no secret that Rex Ryan has trouble controlling locker rooms. At the end of his tenure with the New York Jets, the players quit on him and the locker room was out of control. This year, Ryan will be dealing with personalities like Richie Incognito, Duke Williams and Percy Harvin, and he has been able to keep their egos in check. The team has also dealt with Aaron Kromer’s situation accordingly, and the locker room is in good shape for now.

Sammy Watkins had a “disappointing” first season with the Bills. I use the quotation marks because Watkins was actually pretty good. He caught 65 balls for 982 yards and six touchdowns, which is solid for a rookie, but he was overshadowed league-wide by fellow rookies Odell Beckham Jr. and Mike Evans. Watkins will get better in his second year as he will be fully healthy, and he should play on par with those other extremely talented players.

The Bills' defensive line might be the best four man front in the league. Mario Williams, Jerry Hughes, Kyle Williams and Marcel Dareus are all elite talents who can wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks. The secondary is also very strong, and the linebackers are a pretty solid unit as well. The Bills defense should carry the team, and if they are able to make the playoffs, it will likely be thanks to this side of the ball.

LeSean McCoy is going to be the workhorse back for the Buffalo Bills. That much is clear. What is not clear is who will be the primary backup to him. Fred Jackson was considered to be the early favorite, but the 34-year-old may not end up making the roster. If he can’t beat out rookie Karlos Williams, Anthony Dixon or Bryce Brown, then he probably will be released and his Bills career will be over.

I thought Matt Cassel was a shoo-in to start at quarterback after the team traded for him early in the offseason. However, Cassel has apparently fallen behind in the quarterback competition to EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor, and it appears as though Taylor has a real chance to be the Week 1 starter. Rex Ryan likes mobile quarterbacks, and Taylor certainly fits the bill. If he continues to look good in training camp, he may win the starting job.
