When Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys beat the clock Wednesday afternoon and got their star receiver, Dez Bryant, signed to a long-term deal, it completed what will go down as one of the best weeks in the history of the franchise. Now obviously this isn’t including the weeks where they won their five Super Bowls, but let’s be honest; only a handful of people who were alive during those championships are computer literate enough to even access this article. Heck, my uncle is just now figuring out that I don’t mean a tablet from the biblical days when I use that term. So needless to say, most Cowboys fans who are alive today weren’t around during those championship runs, and this past week’s events could mark a pivotal turning point for this organization.

Just last Friday league arbitrator Harold Henderson finally came out with his decision to reduce NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s ruling of a 10-game suspension down to four for the talented but troubled defensive end Greg Hardy. And by doing so he gave the Cowboys the opportunity to utilize the skills of an All-Pro defensive lineman, something they have been lacking ever since DeMarcus Ware left year, for six additional games.

Hardy is a game changer on the defensive side of the ball, as he has racked up 27 sacks in the last 32 games he’s played in. And by getting an additional six games to play this year, he has more time to shake off the rust that comes with missing the final 15 games of last season. He can play every position on the defensive line, and he alone has the ability to turn the Cowboys’ defense into one of the best in the NFL.

If he decides to take Henderson’s decision to federal court, he could see even more of a reduction of the suspension and could find himself available for the key division games the Cowboys play early on in the season.

This is why the signing of Bryant was so important; the Cowboys could not afford to get off to a slow start in a year where they believe they can finally return to the Super Bowl. They were already facing the possibility of starting the year off without two of their best defensive players in Hardy and Rolando McClain, so the last thing they needed was to be without their best offensive weapon in Bryant.

Bryant had threatened to miss both training camp and the first few games of the year had he and the team not come to a long-term contract agreement. And even if they did manage to work out a temporary one-year deal, they were facing the possibility of having a disgruntled Bryant not giving his all this season due to fear of being injured and never getting a long-term deal.

But now he finally has the deal and the security he has always wanted, and he once again feels appreciated by the team he’s dreamed of playing for ever since he was a kid. And the Cowboys once again have their emotional leader and best playmaker on the field, and now they finally appear poised to make their Super Bowl run.
