Carolina Panthers Rumors: Reggie Wayne Would Be A Valuable Addition

Carolina Panthers Rumors: Reggie Wyane Would Fill Multiple Needs For Team
Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Reggie Wayne will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer five years after he hangs up his cleats, but he’s not ready to do that just yet. Wayne has announced that he wants to play one more season in the NFL before calling it quits. The assumption is that he wants to join a contender so he can make one more run at what would be his second Super Bowl. Wayne says he’s heard from a number of teams, and according to rumors, the Carolina Panthers are one of those teams.

Although he will be turning 37 in November, Wayne still recorded 64 catches for 779 yards last season for the Indianapolis Colts. In his career he has 1,070 catches for 14,345 yards and 80 touchdowns. He doesn’t have the speed that he once possessed, but he still knows how to get open, and Wayne has tremendous hands. Do you think Cam Newton would welcome a player with Wayne’s pedigree as another option in the passing game? Don’t answer, that’s rhetorical question.

Not only would Wayne give Newton another option in the passing game, but he would also be the perfect mentor for the Panthers’ young receivers, Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess. The knowledge that Wayne could instill to those two ultra-talented guys could turn them into the best wide receiver tandem in the NFL.

General manager Dave Gettleman should take a flier on Wayne on a one-year deal, and even if he isn’t able to make much of an impact on the field, he would be an awesome teacher for the Panthers’ young receivers. It’s worth the small risk because there’s an opportunity for a massive reward down the road.
