If you expect bashful and shy from Brandon Flowers, prepare to be heavily disappointed. This is a guy who said he was the best cornerback in the NFL when asked the question amidst his release from the Kansas City Chiefs to the San Diego Chargers.

The Chargers swooped in and decided to bolster their defensive backs by adding Flowers to play alongside second-year veteran Jason Verrett and safety Eric Weddle. While this looked as a great move on paper, the team was still skeptical about Flowers’ ability to fit into their system and only gave him a one-year deal. Well, a year later, Flowers signed a four-year deal worth $36 million. I think they saw all they needed to see.

Flowers was great in Kansas City, being a staple of a dominant secondary during his tenure. He played in 87 of 88 games and really exploded on the scene immediately when he intercepted Brett Favre twice in one game as a rookie. When you look at his career stats with the Chiefs — 328 tackles, 17 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles and 3 defensive touchdowns — you can see why the Chargers were eager to bring Flowers in.

He made an immediate impact in the Charger’s secondary, leading the team in interceptions and passes defended. When you factor in that he was fourth on the team in total tackles, it was vital for the Chargers to re-sign him. Even offensive tackle King Dunlap said the first thing he would do if he was General Manager Tom Telesco was re-sign Flowers. And Voila.

The Chargers are in a now-or-never situation and can’t afford to lose any talent, especially on defense with Weddle and the front office battling over a contract extension. Chargers’ quarterback Philip Rivers is also questionable to re-sign with the team in 2016 so they need to compete (for the Lombardi) in 2015. Re-signing Flowers shows that the team is invested in keeping guys who can contribute to the team and better the team on their quest to win a championship. Even with Flowers not having to play for a big pay day, expect him to be ready to show out in training camp and motivate his team to be ready for 2015 — and not just for the games against his former team.
