Chip Kelly Faces No Pressure Heading Into 2015 Season

The unexpected laughs are always the best ones.  Flipping through the internet on this lazy Sunday afternoon, I happened to stumble across a Dallas beat writer talking about the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach Chip Kelly. The laugh radar didn’t immediately go off because, after all, everyone talks about Kelly these days and for pretty good reason.  But one open-ended question and a small paragraph later, the laugh of the day was in full effect.

The question is straightforward enough:  Who is on the hottest seat in the division?  ESPN posed this question to four NFC East beat writers, and clearly there are some in Dallas that think Kelly should be feeling some degree of heat.  Apparently the implication is that Kelly’s roster turnover was so bold and severe, if things in Philadelphia don’t immediately turn around in 2015 he’s going to be facing the firing squad.

On paper, it’s easy to think that.  But you have to look into this just one tiny layer below the surface to see why this is chuckle-worthy.  Does anyone really think Jeff Lurie would let Kelly blow up the roster like this, let him shape the roster as he sees fit, only to fire him a year later?  Coaches that are legitimately at risk to get fired don’t get the keys to the team handed to them like this.  If they’re on the hot seat, it’s because they’ve failed.  It’s because they are failing.  Owners don’t double down on failure like this.

No, if anything Kelly’s been all but guaranteed some measure of long-term security in Philadelphia.  He’s made do with, largely, another coach’s roster for the past two years.  And while he’s done remarkably well with that roster, at the end of the day you don’t get the full power of his capabilities if you tie his hands like that.  So Lurie took the cuffs off of him this offseason and let him go to work.  He bought in completely, and buying in completely means you give Kelly time to do what he needs to do.

And should the Eagles take a step back this season, for whatever reason that might be, Kelly’s going to have the time to fix it.  He’s one-hundred percent in the driver’s seat and Lurie’s given him, as of now, the next three years to figure it out.  Because if Kelly can do what he’s done already without his ideal roster, imagine the damage he can do with it.

Kelly on the hot seat?  Nope.  Kelly’s on a padded chair, feet propped up on a footrest and drinking lemonade with a little umbrella in it.  He’s more comfortable than just about anyone else in the league.
