Reggie Wayne is currently a free agent waiting for the right opportunity to come his way to join a team for the upcoming 2015 NFL season. He has made it clear that he wants to play another season and that he has received interest from multiple teams. According to a report from Dave Furst, the Green Bay Packers are one of the teams interested in signing him.

Ted Thompson is always looking to bring more talent in for the Packers, and Wayne would be a perfect way to round out their offense. He may be 36 years old, but he is still more than capable of being a consistent presence when he’s on the field. What type of role he would have with the Packers in a crowded wide receiver depth chart is an interesting question, but it would likely mean quite a few four wide receiver sets.

Aaron Rodgers doesn’t have too much talent at the tight end position, which could open the Packers up to playing more wide receivers. Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb are obviously the top two players on the depth chart and are two of the best wide receivers in the NFL, while second-year talent Davante Adams is ready to step up as well. Wayne would be the No. 4 receiver on the roster, but he could very well see quite a bit of playing time with the Packers’ offense.

Last season with the Indianapolis Colts, Wayne finished with 64 receptions for 779 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers proved that he is still capable of contributing to a competitive team despite dealing with multiple nagging injuries.

Being able to switch from playing alongside Andrew Luck to Rodgers would be a very easy and smooth transition for Wayne. Needless to say, the Packers make more sense for Wayne than either the Baltimore Ravens or Houston Texans. Neither of those teams can offer him the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl this season. Green Bay can offer that, and it would be easier to sign with them than for Wayne to betray the fanbase in Indianapolis and join the rival New England Patriots.

That being said, if Wayne wants to get back at the Colts for not re-signing him in favor of Andre Johnson, then the Patriots would be his best choice. Green Bay still seems like a better fit if they can come up with a way to convince him that he will be on the field a lot. Mike McCarthy and the Packers’ coaching staff are more than capable of coming up with a role for Wayne, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see these two sides get into deeper discussions fairly soon.
