It has been quite some time since the Jacksonville Jaguars have had a difference-maker at wide receiver. Not since the days of Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell in the early 2000s has the team had a receiver capable of striking fear into opposing defenses. Following an injury-shortened rookie season, second-year wide receiver Allen Robinson has been drawing rave reviews and appears poised to break out.

Robinson flashed his breakout potential as a rookie, catching 48 passes for 548 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a stress fracture in his foot and missing the final six games of 2014. Before the injury he was on pace for 77 receptions for 877 yards.

The Jaguars brought him back slowly from his injury during organized team activities, but once healthy, he quickly established himself as the team’s most dominant receiver. There is plenty of reason for optimism regarding Robinson’s ability to have a breakout season.

For starters, quarterback Blake Bortles appears ready to take the next step in his development. The young signal-caller spent the offseason working on the fundamentals and improving his mechanics. He and Robinson had a good rapport going last season before the latter went down with an injury.

Also working in Robinson’s favor is the Jaguars’ addition of multiple playmakers which should keep opposing defenses from focusing on the young wideout. The Jaguars signed tight end Julius Thomas in free agency. Thomas is a proven playmaker with 24 touchdowns over the past two seasons with the Denver Broncos. The team also drafted running back T.J. Yeldon and slot receiver Rashad Greene.

If all goes as planned, and Robinson remains healthy, he has the potential to be a true No. 1 wide receiver and become the first Jaguars receiver with 1,000 yards or more in a season since Smith accomplished the feat back in 2005.
