Former Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley has increased his workout regimen in hopes of getting back to his playing weight of 250 pounds. At 33 years old, Cooley is considering a comeback attempt. With the type of tight ends that exist in today’s game, there’s no way Cooley could still be an impact player.

Cooley last played in the NFL in 2012, when he re-joined the Redskins midseason after being cut during training camp with the team. While Cooley was one of the better receiving tight ends during the prime of his career, it would be hard to expect him to be able to rediscover his old self at this point, but that may not matter to him.

“If I went to camp, I could be anybody’s third tight end, worst case,” Cooley told the Washington Post. “I have no doubt. Any team in the NFL, I could be their third tight end. There’s not a question in my mind.”

What kind of validation is that for coming out of retirement? Unless Cooley’s going through some sort of money crisis, why would he want to come back to be a team’s third tight end? He has a daughter, Sloane, at home, who isn’t even a year old yet. It doesn’t sound like attempting an NFL comeback should be where his priorities lie right at the moment.

Cooley should stick to his current duties working as a football analyst for ESPN 980 in Rockville, Md. and calling Redskins games on the radio. He shouldn’t risk his great legacy with the Redskins by attempting a comeback just to prove that he can make an NFL roster. It’s a half-baked idea, and it would bother a lot of Redskins fans if Cooley were to go play for another NFL team.
