Washington Redskins Must Realize That DeAngelo Hall Is Wearing Out

It is well known that the biggest issue for the Washington Redskins’ defense was their despicable secondary. This had a lot to do with the absence of DeAngelo Hall. The seven-year veteran tore his Achilles at the beginning of last season, which was a big blow to the young, inexperienced secondary.

In 2013, Hall had 57 tackles, 13 pass deflections, four interceptions, and two touchdowns. He made quarterbacks think twice before throwing the ball in his direction. He tore his Achilles twice last season, causing some major setbacks. Hall is also getting up there in age, and normally you could expect at least 1-2 more very productive seasons out of him, but the injury has caused concern for Redskins nation. The word is that Hall probably won’t be ready for the start of training camp.

That raises a few red flags. The staff now has to be careful in limiting his workload, which in turn will limit his reps and playing time when the preseason comes around.  I’m all for trying to preserve what is left in Hall, but this might be the time to give new people a chance to start, and bring Hall in for spot plays.

Bashaud Breeland and David Amerson played exceptionally well last season even though the Redskins still had the worst secondary in the league. They showed that they could be the guys of the future for the Redskins’ defense. Chris Culliver and Dashon Goldson bring the veteran presence that would allow the Redskins to take the risk and start one of these young guys.

There are too many factors that are pointing to the demise of Hall. It is time to let the future take its course. Hall and the Redskins had a good run while it lasted. He gave a lot to the organization and the city during his time here. He still will serve a big role in playing in the nickelback formation, third-down situations and clutch time down the stretch.

Let’s not forget that he will be a phenomenal mentor to these young guys as well. Just like Santana Moss has stepped back and accepted his role, I believe that this is the course that Hall needs to take. I don’t see the Redskins taking this approach. They seem to want to give Hall another go-around and see if the injury won’t cause any more problems. It may not be the best time to play the waiting game.
