Late Tuesday night, a member of the Buffalo Bills found his name making headlines. Marquise Goodwin, a receiver who is buried on the team’s depth chart, got a lot of publicity after he won a silver medal in the long jump at the 2015 Pan American Games. Goodwin has always been known as a player with great athleticism, but the Bills really didn’t utilize him properly last season. This season, they need figure out a way to get the ball into Goodwin’s hands so the dynamic athlete can make big plays.

One way that the Bills could get Goodwin into games this season is by using him as a return man. Goodwin has only returned a total of 20 kicks during his two-year career, which is relatively surprising given the fact that he has the ability to take the ball to the house any time he gets his hands on it. Though he doesn’t have a special teams touchdown during his career, he should still get a shot at playing the position. He has a lot of potential, and he could develop into a solid return man.

The Bills should also look into getting Goodwin some extra snaps at receiver in each game. That is easier said than done, thanks to Buffalo’s great receiving corps, but the team should run a play or two designed for Goodwin each game. He has the ability to burn any defensive back with his straight line speed, and he has averaged 18.1 yards per catch during his career. Sending a couple of deep balls Goodwin’s way each game couldn’t hurt.

The Bills could also consider using Goodwin in a wildcat set. The team may run a wildcat package during the season, and I could definitely see them doing that if Tyrod Taylor is the starter. Goodwin would flourish as a weapon in those sets. He could come across on jet sweeps or even run an option play to the outside with whoever the wildcat QB ends up being. I think it would be interesting to see Goodwin in the wildcat, and the team should consider implementing the scheme.

Goodwin is an extremely athletic player. Whether he is running, jumping or evading tacklers, he needs to be on the field more for the team. If he can just become a good deep threat, Goodwin could add another new dimension to the already improved Bills’ offense. Expect him to play more this season for the potential playoff contenders.
