Dallas Cowboys Should Kick the Tires on Free Agent Dwight Freeney

The Dallas Cowboys already have a drastically improved defensive line compared to last season’s unit, but the team is in an all-in, win-now mode for 2015 and that includes some one-year, “prove it” deals with veterans. Why not add one more to the list just for training camp, if nothing else?

Dwight Freeney is currently a free agent and was once recognized as the best pass-rusher in the NFL. Of course, that was years ago when he was still with an elite Indianapolis Colts team and playing in his natural 4-3 defensive end spot.

Since then, Freeney has endured two rough seasons with the San Diego Chargers (12 tackles and four sacks) at the 4-3 outside linebacker spot that he admits he doesn’t like.

“I have aspirations to play, but the thing is I have to be in the right situation for me,” Freeney told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “I can’t get put in a situation where I’m running away from the ball. I want to run toward the guy with the ball more than I’m running away.”

Put simply, he didn’t enjoy the added responsibilities of playing linebacker, specifically pass coverage. At 35, you can’t blame him and the Chargers didn’t exactly make an ingenious decision when putting him in that situation.

The Cowboys run Freeney’s coveted 4-3 defense and they could absolutely use a veteran with his track record in training camp to compete for a spot. If he wins a job, he’d be a solid contributor for a team looking to cash in on everything he has left in a Super Bowl-or-bust season. If he doesn’t, he’ll undoubtedly make the younger players who do better in the process.

So basically, the Cowboys have nothing to lose by bringing him in, assuming he doesn’t demand something silly contract-wise.

Between salary and roster bonus combined, his cap hit was over $4 million with the Chargers last year and he knows he’s not exactly a hot commodity with NFL training camps set to start in less than a week. Add in the fact the Cowboys have some extra salary cap for 2015 after signing Dez Bryant to a new long-term deal and Freeney could easily come on board for a small enough amount to make it worth Dallas’ while.

Of course, if the Cowboys were to give Freeney a respectable one-year deal, then it would be hard to not have him on the field for 2015. But as mentioned above, it would still benefit the team indirectly just to have him go through training camp.

If he’s on the active roster, he’d likely be a solid situational pass-rusher, which is what he wants to be and what the Cowboys actually could use at this point. Plus, he’d be nice to have around during Greg Hardy’s four-game absence.

There’s nothing to suggest the Cowboys have interest in Freeney at this point, but they have the flexibility to kick the tires on him. Put simply, they absolutely should.
