The Jacksonville Jaguars released wide receiver/punt returner Ace Sanders last week following two tumultuous seasons with the team. And the Jags wasted no time finding his replacement, adding a player who has the ability to fill the same roles.

The team signed wide receiver Greg Jenkins on Friday to take the place of Sanders, bringing the roster back to its 90-man limit. Jenkins adds another body to the already deep pool of players looking to replace Sanders as the team’s primary punt returner. He joins a group that includes Tandon Doss, Bryan Walters, Rashad Greene and Damian Copeland that will compete throughout training camp and the preseason.

Jenkins entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Oakland Raiders in 2013. He saw action in six games as a rookie, mostly as a returner. The Alabama State product returned 10 kickoffs for an average of 22.1 yards and returned six punts for an 8.2-yard average. He was waived/injured at the end of training camp last season, but later returned and finished the year on the Raiders’ practice squad.

A former college quarterback, Jenkins will be reunited with Jaguars offensive coordinator Greg Olson, who held the same job with the Raiders for the past two seasons.

As a late addition to the punt return competition, Jenkins faces an uphill battle to make the final roster. However, the decision to sign him, coupled with the release of Sanders, makes it apparent the Jaguars are looking for an upgrade in the return game.

Jenkins’ familiarity with Olson should definitely work in his favor, and at the very least, he is a low-risk signing with the potential to pay off in a major way at an area where the team is desperate for help.
