The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Storm Johnson in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the hope he could develop into a key contributor in their depleted backfield. As a rookie, Johnson failed to take advantage in limited opportunities, and as a result he enters his second season firmly on the roster bubble.

Johnson was active for just six games last season and finished with just 86 yards on 29 carries and one touchdown. Similar to most young running backs, he struggled in pass protection and was unable to establish himself as a reliable contributor in a rushing offense that finished 21st in rushing yards per game.

The 23-year-old Johnson may find it even more difficult to get on the field or even make the team this season. Competition at the position is much deeper than it was this time a year ago. The Jaguars spent their second-round draft pick on former Alabama running back T.J. Yeldon. While Yeldon must still earn the starting job, he will likely be the feature back this season. Toby Gerhart and Denard Robinson return from last season and will likely serve as the top backups. The team claimed veteran Bernard Pierce off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens this offseason, and was pleasantly surprised by undrafted rookie Corey Grant in organized team activities.

With that said, there is still a question as to how many running backs the Jaguars will keep in 2015. The decision to go without a fullback this season could make room for an extra back. If that is the case, it certainly bodes well for Johnson. His most likely chance to stick on the roster appears to be as a kick returner, where he will compete with Robinson, Grant and others. He will also need to show what he is capable of out of the backfield.

Luckily for Johnson, nobody is asking him to be an every-down back. If he can carve out a role on special teams and improve as an all-around back it should be enough for him to make the final roster.
