Denver Broncos Rumors: Team Set to Sign QB Christian Ponder?

With Peyton Manning injured and only rookie Trevor Siemian behind new starter Brock Osweiler, the Denver Broncos are looking for depth at quarterback. That’s led them to free agent Christian Ponder, who could sign with the team pending a Wednesday workout.

Ponder spent training camp and the preseason with the Oakland Raiders, but failed to make the final 53-man roster. Prior to his stint with Oakland, Ponder was a sporadic starter for the Minnesota Vikings, who used a 2011 first-round pick on the Florida State product.

During his days with the Vikings, Ponder started 36 games, proving to be little more than a bust. Although he never was a complete disaster, his proneness for turnovers, inability to stay healthy and overall ineffectiveness led to Minnesota letting him walk after the 2014 campaign.

While Ponder may provide more experience than Seimen behind Osweiler, he’s far from a reliable backup. As we saw when he started for Minnesota, he struggles to make plays and would probably do more harm than good for a Denver team that has already struggled to consistently move the ball on offense.

Obviously a signing isn’t imminent, but adding Ponder to the mix wouldn’t be the wisest option for the Broncos.
