Broncos’ Brock Osweiler Audibled Into C.J. Anderson’s Game-Winning Run

When the Denver Broncos benched Peyton Manning in favor of unproven backup Brock Osweiler, there was a lot of concern that the former second-round pick wouldn’t live up to his predecessor’s legacy. While he obviously still has a LONG way to go before reaching Manning’s level, Osweiler proved on Sunday night that he’s already learned some of the future Hall of Famer’s tricks.

During a tight Sunday Night showdown with the New England Patriots, Osweiler had the Broncos moving the ball in overtime. He took the offense to the line, read what New England’s defense gave him and called an audible to a different play — a run that would result in a C.J. Anderson touchdown and the Patriots’ first loss of the season.

In the below video, you can hear Osweiler yelling “Kill! Kill!”, which is a common term in the NFL for “killing” the play called and running a predetermined second play instead.

Here’s what Osweiler had to say about the play after the game:

“It was a check that we had worked on all week in practice,” Osweiler said. “We were trying to run the ball [to the] weak [side]. They gave us a specific defensive front that we can’t run that ball into, so I checked to our second play that we called in our huddle. The line did a hell of a job and C.J. did the rest.”

Since stepping in as the Broncos’ starting quarterback, Osweiler is 2-0 and has quickly taken the reins of an offense that was lackluster under Manning. With the young, confident Osweiler under center instead of the crippled, aging Manning, there’s no telling how far this Denver team can go before all is said and done.
