Oakland Raiders defensive back Charles Woodson announced on Monday that the 2015 NFL Season will be his last as he will hang it up after 18 seasons. At 39 years old, Woodson’s decision isn’t exactly shocking, but it comes during one of the best seasons of his career as he’s recorded five interceptions, three forced fumbles and 65 tackles through only 14 games. It seemed as if he had found the fountain of youth and could play at least another season, but he would rather spend time with his family and no one can fault him for that.

Here’s a video of Woodson explaining his decision:

With two games left to go in his career, Woodson is tied for fifth in NFL history with 65 interceptions and has recorded 202 passes defensed, 16 fumble recoveries and 11 defensive return touchdowns. He’s played safety and corner and was the leader of the Green Bay Packers‘ defense that won Super Bowl XLV against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Woodson didn’t just have success at the NFL level as he won the Heisman Trophy in 1997 while at Michigan. He’s the last player to win a Heisman that wasn’t a quarterback or running back and he’s the only primary defensive player to win the award in its history.

While it’s tough to watch such a brilliant player walk away from it all, I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors. Thank you for the memories!
