It’s safe to say that this season has been a massive disappointment for the Miami Dolphins. Thought to be a team that could challenge for a Wild Card spot, the Dolphins have been one of the worst teams in the AFC this season, stumbling to a 5-10 record through 16 weeks. The Dolphins fired their head coach Joe Philbin early in the year and will be searching for his replacement this offseason. Although interim head coach Dan Campbell has done a decent job in relief of Philbin, he just isn’t a long-term fit at the position. The Dolphins should look into hiring Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, as he would be perfect for the team.

Jackson has been a huge part of the Bengals’ offensive success over the past couple seasons, and his work this year was particularly impressive. Jackson helped lead Andy Dalton to one of the best seasons of his career. He has also done a good job of creating manageable offensive game plans for backup AJ McCarron, who took over after Dalton fractured his thumb. In general, Jackson has been able to make the Bengals’ offensive attack successful, and he has made the most of the great unit headed by players like A.J. Green, Jeremy Hill, Giovani Bernard and Tyler Eifert.

Jackson would be able to run a similar attack if he were to move to Miami. Ryan Tannehill has some similarities to Dalton, though his arm strength is lacking, but Jackson would be able to install a passing scheme that works for him. A run oriented offense featuring Lamar Miller, if they re-signed him, would take some pressure off of Tannehill. Jackson implemented a run based attack early in his Cincinnati career and it paid dividends in helping Dalton progress.

The Dolphins have some young talent at the skill positions as well in running back Jay Ajayi, receiver DeVante Parker and speed threat Kenny Stills. Jackson would be able to utilize them and get them to play to their full potential, like he has with the stable of receivers he had in Cincinnati.

The final plus to naming Jackson the head coach would be the experience he brings to the team. Jackson has been an offensive coordinator four different times during his NFL career, and he has also been a head coach. Jackson coached the Oakland Raiders in 2011, leading them to an 8-8 record. It was tied for their best season since they made the postseason in 2002, and it’s still a mystery as to why they elected to part ways with him.

In the long run, this would be the best move that the Dolphins could make. Jackson is a savvy veteran coach who would bring great experience and a new attitude to the team. He could make a major impact on the Dolphins’ underwhelming offense, and he could end up being one of the better coaches in the NFL if given the chance.
