TCU QB Trevone Boykin Ruins NFL Draft Stock With His Arrest

Trevone Boykin TCU Quarterback

Rob Ferguson – USA TODAY Sports

On Thursday morning, TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin was arrested and charged with a felony. Boykin reportedly got into a fight at a San Antonio bar and also allegedly struck a police officer who was on a bike. Boykin was suspended for the Valero Alamo Bowl as a result and has pretty much guaranteed that he will not be selected in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Boykin was already facing long odds of making it in the league because he doesn’t fit the typical mold of an NFL quarterback. Boykin is undersized and while he is athletic, he has very limited ability as a pocket passer. Not many quarterbacks have succeeded as a result of poor pocket passing traits, and that helped to guarantee that he would only be a late-round prospect at the very best.

Of course, there was always a chance that Boykin could up his stock by switching positions. Boykin does have excellent athleticism as mentioned earlier, so he could have converted to a wide receiver, a running back or a cornerback to help make him rise in the draft process. He still would have been a project, but teams may have been more willing to take a risk on him because of his raw talent.

Now, with the arrest on his record, Boykin is looking to be an undraftable prospect. It’s an unfortunate situation, given that he had seemingly had good character before this happened. Still, given the timing of the arrest, it is safe to wonder whether or not Boykin was as focused as he should have been on football. Teams tend to value focus and work ethic when they look at late-round prospects, so that will definitely hurt his chances.

When it’s all said and done, Boykin will get a camp invite, but it’s highly unlikely that he will be selected in the 2016 draft. He should look to rehabilitate his image during the draft season workouts and interviews. Best-case scenario for Boykin would be landing with a team that likes mobile quarterbacks and has a need for a backup like the Buffalo Bills. He will get a chance to prove himself, but for now Boykin has ruined his draft stock.
