Jacksonville Jaguars Would Be Wise To Re-Sign Chad Henne

One of the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ top offseason priorities could be re-signing a player who did not even play a single snap for them this season. Quarterback Chad Henne is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but the Jaguars would be wise to re-sign the veteran signal-caller.

Henne originally signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent prior to the 2012 season. He started 22 games with the team from 2012-14, but did not take a snap this season while serving as Blake Bortles’ backup. It was the first time in his eight-year career he did not take a snap in a single game.

The Jaguars would likely love to have Henne back and have him continue in his role as mentor to Bortles, but given the state of the quarterback position across the NFL, he could be tempted to test the open market.

Out of the 32 teams in the league, 15 used a different starting quarterback at some point during the regular season. The Houston Texans, who defeated the Jaguars 30-6 in Sunday’s regular season finale, were forced to use four different starting quarterbacks over the course of the season, and they still somehow managed to win the AFC South.

With 53 starts under his belt, Henne offers plenty of experience and has proven to be a serviceable quarterback throughout his career. A former second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in the 2008 NFL Draft, he has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes for 58 touchdowns and 63 interceptions. It is easy to see why he would be an attractive option for a team in need of a quarterback.

If Henne were to depart, the Jaguars’ options to replace him could be limited. In a free agent quarterback class headlined by Sam Bradford and Matt Schaub, it is clear the Jaguars should do everything in their power to keep Henne in Jacksonville in 2016 and beyond.
