Detroit Lions Should Pursue Tom Coughlin

If there’s anyone who could change the Detroit Lions‘ incompetence, it’s Tom Coughlin, the former hard-nosed coach of the New York Giants.

Coughlin guided the Giants to two Super Bowl wins over the New England Patriotsthough they were heavy underdogs.

The Lions, a star-crossed franchise, need someone with much resolve to come in and eradicate this losing mentality. Detroit needs someone who won’t fold under the pressure or tolerate the nonsensical theatrics of players and management alike. A coach like Coughlin, who extracts the most out of his players, would also instill a toughness this team has been lacking for ages.

Coughlin did excellent work with Eli Manning, and boasted some dominating defensive lines during his tenure in New York. These are two precise keys the Lions need. They need someone who can develop Matthew Stafford and continue Ezekial Ansah and the rest of Detroit’s defensive line’s upward trajectory.

A coach of his pedigree would be the remedy to cure all afflictions. Sure, there are other commodities like Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase — but none of them are proven. None of them have Super Bowl rings.

Coughlin does. And Detroit needs experience at the helm. A no-nonsense mentality needs to be instilled in that Allen Park facility. Who could do it better than the 70-year-old who still has the ferocity to challenge anyone?

Coughlin also isn’t timid regarding coaching changes. If something isn’t working, he’ll change it — unlike Jim Caldwell and Jim Schwartz who refused to change their offensive staffs, no matter how many offensive issues arose.

Detroit finally has a chance for change. The Lions needs to get the right general manager in there, and then endow Coughlin to turn things around.
