ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen Diagnosed With Throat Cancer

When talking about the best NFL insiders on network television, Chris Mortensen is one of the first names that comes to mind. Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing Mortensen on ESPN for a while after he announced that he’s been diagnosed with Stage IV throat cancer and will be taking time off for treatment.

“Consequently, with the support and encouragement from ESPN president John Skipper and many others at ESPN, I am temporarily stepping away from my normal NFL coverage duties to better engage this opportunity to fight the good fight that is projected to affect almost 1.7 million Americans with new cases in 2016,” Mortensen said, via ESPN.

Mortensen began his journalism career in 1969 when he joined The Daily Breeze newspaper in Torrance, CA. From there, he joined the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 1983 and covered the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons and the NFL. Mortensen also covered the NFL for The National from 1989-90 before he joined ESPN in 1991.

Mortensen isn’t the first ESPN employee to be diagnosed with cancer. Ed Werder, Shelley Smith and Stuart Scott have all battled cancer with Scott losing his battle in 2015. I can’t wait until doctors find a cure for this disease, there are way too many good people leaving this Earth too soon.
