Tony Dungy Beats The Odds To Make It Into Hall Of Fame

By Kyle Nishida

It certainly was a good day to be an Indianapolis Colts fan Saturday night as the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced it would be inducting Marvin Harrison and Tony Dungy as members of its elite club. While Harrison’s induction was expected and long overdue, Dungy’s was never really set in stone. While Dungy truly deserves to be a Hall of Famer, it was still surprising to see he made the cut this year because the 15-member finalist pool was stacked.

Dungy built up quite the resume in his 13-year head coaching career in NFL. He spent six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before finishing his career with six seasons in Indianapolis. As a head coach, Dungy picked up 139 regular season wins and a .668 career winning percentage, which is ninth all-time among coaches with at least 50 wins. He also has nine playoff wins, which includes a victory in Super Bowl XLI with the Colts. As a result, he became the first African American head coach to win the Super Bowl.

Dungy’s selection is also a bit shocking because all 15 NFL finalists he was going up against had a tremendous impact on the game of football. But obviously, there are some individuals who have really strong cases. Dungy beat out amazing players like Terrell Owens, John Lynch and Kurt Warner for a place in this year’s Hall of Fame class. This feat is even more impressive because Modern-Era head coaches are rarely selected as finalists and inducted into the Hall of Fame.

For a while now, it has been extremely hard for Modern-Era head coaches to earn enough votes to get into the NFL’s exclusive club. The Modern-Era selection committee does not usually select head coaches as finalists and rarely inducts them into its exclusive ranks. Since 2000, the only two Modern-Era head coaches inducted into the Hall of Fame are Marv Levy in 2001 and Bill Parcells in 2013. Dungy now joins these two as one of the very few coaches to beat these unfavorable odds.
